There are numerous European Commission Directives to ensure that plastic materials and articles which come into contact with food, do not permit the migration of monomers at levels which may contaminate or impart a taint to the food product. Within the UK the implementation of these European Commission Directives is enacted by Statutory Instrument No. 1376 "The Plastic Material and Articles in Contact with Food Regulations 1998" and its subsequent amendments.
These regulations are issued under the Food Safety Act 1990 and are enforced by local authorities. Anyone connected with the manufacture, importation, wholesale and retail of food contact plastic materials are required to ensure due diligence to meet the legislative requirements. The regulation are far reaching and apply not only to containers for food use but also to machinery, equipment and utensils which come into contact with food.
We undertakes testing for both overall migration and, in some cases, for specific migration of approved monomers from plastic material and articles. Methods for overall migration are based on CEN standards and are accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
